The Eastern Kingdom is one of the newest human states in the World in Chaos.
It was settled in the year 4.667 Waterburg time, by a Waterburg nobleman called Mluguth I Torbagil, a descendant of the House of Torbag in the Waterburg Council of Nobles. He claimed the land in his own name, and soon his kingdom prospered. At the time of conquest, only a few tribes of anork lived among the hills.
A few historians theorize that the landmass the Kingdom is based on has just recently been uncovered by the waves of the Sea of Woleborn, and its emergence is connected with the gradual sinking of Waterburg itself.
Etymology
In the Human tongue, Yles á Brűtheb simply means Eastern Kingdom. This is to signify that it is to the east of Waterburg, as the mainland of Ungri and Feiesadd are considered to be civilized according to human standards, and lie more to the east.
The alternative name, Kingdom of Keg, was given by Fjerdesaali sailors well before Mluguth I was crowned. The Fjerd-men had no interest in these lands, as at that time it was infested by large hordes of anork. This population must have declined, as by the time of the conquest only a few settlements remained, most of which the humans warred against and chased off or destroyed.
For the Kingdom of Ungri, as it has a strong connection with the royal houses of the Kingdom, it is called Un-Ubar-bar-Ungru, The Land West of Ungri, a place of relative prosperity compared to the hardships the aboriginals have to endure in Ungrívas.
Races
The kingdom is occupied mostly by humans. Its eastern vassal, the Free City of Fleettown, houses a quarter for lesser peoples such as roachmen. A few elves are known to be visiting Mistgate University to delve into the arcane library found there.
A few cave-dwelling anork are still said to be lingering about the Orkborg mountains to the east of the capitol.
Although the kingdom is young, its inhabitants are industrious, and there is great spirit among the martial classes.
State and Society
The kingship is hereditary and usually falls on the eldest son of the deceased king. The lands are ruled by barons and townships. The two major vassals of the King are the Duke of Enme Förmi, another hereditary title created in WB 4678 by Mluguth I for his eldest son, and the Border Margrave, his center of power being Blackgate, which latter was created as a result of eastwards expansion in WB 4743 by King Ilabar-Momseg I of the House of Förmiad-Ungri for his elder son Bartozs I.
Most of the kingdom is rural, with a few villages and farming towns, with the city of Mistgate on the river Stoverante being the center and the king's seat. The two rivers (the other being the north-bound Storesilos) are waterways that connect the larger settlements and allow trade to flow, as the road network is badly maintained.
Each baron is obliged to maintain a defensible stone castle and a sizeable retinue, as threats from the Barbarian lands are constant, and Waterburg is also keen on effecting its old claims on the land.
The kingdom's society is ruled by the King, who makes law, and the six orders who confirm him, which are: warriors, sages, nobles and noblewomen, citizens, free workers, and lastly innkeeps and wandering singers, as confirmed in the original Kingslaw, the first constitution of the kingdom, made in WB 4790 by King Bartozs I the Peacemaker of the House of Förmiad-Ungri.
The place where royal power is the less felt is the so-called Spearfork, a great peninsula pointing north into the Sea of Woleborn, where the lay of land and its relative seclusion allow criminals and thugs to seek shelter. There are no true settlements within this land, and only a few thousand people live here, trying to sneak past the ever watchful eye of the Margrave on secret paths or by small boats hugging the western coast.
